‘Tentative First Steps….’

Initial moves to ease the lockdown here are set to begin next week. First Minister Arlene Foster said garden centres and recycling facilities can reopen from Monday, after the Executive this week published a five-phase plan, without specific dates, for lifting restrictions.

Further discussions will be held next week about a possible timetable for further changes.

Meanwhile, the Irish government announced it is “safe to proceed” with an initial easing of restrictions from Monday. The Taoiseach is understood to have briefed Arlene Foster and Michelle O’Neill ahead of the announcement.

Death toll doubts

With the weekly release of the latest figures showing the extent of the Covid-19 outbreak in Northern Ireland, there are also uncertainties over the way deaths are measured.
