Italians voted down Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s plans for constitutional reform by a margin of 59% to 41%, resulting in his resignation. The Italian President has asked Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni to form a government. Opposition parties have ruled out joining a national unity government.

The Guardian shared footage of UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson saying Saudi Arabia and Iran were involved in “proxy wars being fought the whole time” in the Middle East. 10 Downing Street said Mr Johnson’s comments were his own views, not those of the government. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon played down reports of a rift between Mr Johnson and the Prime Minister.

US President-elect Donald Trump rejected the CIA’s assessment that Russian hackers tried to influence November’s election in his favour. President Obama has ordered a review of the hacks targeting emails at the Democratic Party and of an aide to Hillary Clinton. Mr Trump branded the CIA’s assertion “ridiculous”; Democrats were behind the news reports, he said, not the CIA.

The Kurdish militant group TAK said it carried out a deadly attack on police outside an Istanbul football stadium, killing at least 38 people. The TAK is an offshoot of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and made the claim on its website.

The son of an Irish prison officer murdered by the IRA, Austin Stack, confronted Gerry Adams at a press conference, accusing Mr Adams of lying about the names he provided to Irish police as to who may have been involved. Responding to this, Mr Adams said: “I just want to reject absolutely Austin’s assertion that I’ve told lies or untruths. I haven’t.”
